How to Set Up Your First Interior Design Sample Library: Essential Tools You Need

So, you want to be an interior designer without going the traditional route of getting a degree? Let’s talk about something crucial: your interior design sample library. Trust me, I’ve been there… I know how overwhelming this part can feel. When I started my design career over a decade ago, setting up my first office was one of my biggest challenges. I was great at design but not so great at organizing. I didn’t know what I needed, how to set things up, or how to make it all work.

Over time, I learned what tools and systems would make the process easier, and I am now sharing that with you! I put together an Amazon list of all the items that helped me create an affordable, functional interior design office and sample library—or what I wish I had. Whether you're working from home or will have a physical office space, these must-haves will keep your samples organized and accessible. Less stress = more productivity & creativity.

A Clean, Neutral Desk for Maximum Creativity

You can’t start setting up your sample library without a good desk. My personal preference is a white desk because it gives you a blank slate to work with. No distractions, no clashing colors — just a clean, simple surface that lets you be as creative as possible. I’ve tried a variety of desks over the years, and an adjustable, standing desk with drawer space is my absolute go-to. It’s practical, and it’s great for maintaining good posture during those long days spent planning and designing.

Cube Shelves for Sample Storage (and the Key to Organization)

You’ll need a way to keep all of your materials organized and easily accessible. Cube shelves help you store everything neatly and are perfect for the massive number of sample books you’ll collect over time. Once you start building relationships with vendors, you’ll get a ton of samples.

For smaller, more delicate items, I recommend using baskets or cube bins. You can hide things that don’t need to be on display, and they give you the freedom to keep your office tidy. Also, make sure to use basket clip labels to organize everything. They clip on and can be moved around easily, which means no more awkward sticker situations. For items like tiles or sample swatches, I also love removable label stickers. They stick temporarily and come off cleanly when you need them to.

Fabric & Wallpaper Samples? Hang Them!

Keeping fabric and wallpaper samples organized can be tricky. I found hanging them with single-clip hangers to color-code your fabric samples, or using a hang ring system, was the easiest to access.

A hanging rack with shelves to hold books and other samples that need some extra room is a great double solution.

Get Items on Wheels for Easy Mobility

Full tile samples are HEAVY. That’s why a rolling heavy tile rack is a must-have—it makes it easy to roll those heavy samples around without worrying about damaging your floor or walls. Trust me, I wish I had found this sooner.

Consider using rolling drawers or mobile carts to store small, loose items. They’re great for keeping things close by while you work on a project, and they’re easy to move when you need more space.

Without the wheels, you risk breaking samples and scratching floors.

Racks & Displays for Mixed Samples

For larger samples like LVT or medium tile, a wall tile rack is a great space saver and makes your office look professional.

For the smaller sample displays, there’s an option that’s been a game-changer in keeping my workspace organized without taking up too much room. A small tile sample display is perfect for those single or handful of samples you’ll get from your vendors, especially if they don’t come with any form of organization. Trust me, this small but mighty display keeps everything neat and easy to access, so you can find what you need without scrambling.

Display Solutions for Client Meetings

Sample & product magazines tend to get lost on shelves, so I love the idea of using a portable/foldable magazine display. They’re super versatile and can hold catalogs, brochures, or even printed mood boards. Plus, they’re easy to move around, which makes them perfect for meetings. I wish I had found these before, but I only discovered them while curating these items for you!

I also like using acrylic display stands on your desk for materials or printouts. Perfect for client presentations or showing project samples up close.

And for smaller samples, a project sample organizer tray keeps everything neatly contained and ready to grab.

Tables for Ideation and Workspace

Aside from your desk, having a table to work and ideate with your materials is key. Depending on your space:

Lighting, Plants, and Other Finishing Touches

Your space should be inviting and functional. Here’s what I love:

  • Floor area lamp or wall lights to give the right lighting while working or reviewing color samples.

  • Faux plants to make the office feel lively and fresh.

  • Magnetic wall strips to organize project ideas, inspiration, and notes—you can attach sample pieces, magazine cutouts, and sketches to keep everything in view.

Bonus Items for Designers or Gifts for Designers

Just for fun, if you want to treat yourself or a fellow designer:

  • A Pantone notebook for color inspiration on the go.

  • Designer mug, because caffeine = life.

  • Tote – because every designer needs a little extra style in the office.

And, of course, don’t forget to add a few personal touches to your workspace to make it feel like your space. Whether it’s a quirky mug, a fun piece of artwork, or a beautiful plant, these little elements make the space feel inviting and help spark creativity while you’re working with all those materials.

Conclusion: Get Organized, Stay Inspired

I hope these tips help you as you set up your own interior design sample library. Having a well-organized space not only makes your workflow more efficient but also keeps you inspired. Remember, everything from your storage shelves to your labeling system can help you work smarter, not harder.
